DUBAI: Brazilian footballer Neymar has tested positive for COVID-19, his club Santos said in a statement as quoted by Brazilian media.
The 33-year-old forward began showing symptoms last Thursday and was promptly removed from all team activities. Subsequent medical tests confirmed the viral infection.
The club has not specified the duration of Neymar’s absence. He had already been ruled out of Santos’ upcoming fixture against Fortaleza through suspension, making this latest health setback particularly untimely.
What’s next for Neymar?
Santos will face Fortaleza on Thursday in their final match before Brazil’s Serie A halts for the June 14 to July 13 Club World Cup, which is being hosted in the United States. Neymar’s future with Santos remains uncertain, as his contract expires on June 30.
Injuries have limited the former Barcelona and PSG star’s contributions this season. Across 12 appearances in all competitions, he has registered three goals and three assists, sparking speculation around his next move post-contract.
How important is Neymar for Santos?
Brazil teammate Casemiro recently praised Neymar’s talent, placing him in the top tier of global footballers. “Neymar, what can I say about him? He's an outstanding player, who, for me, in my football cycle, is in the top three, with Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi,” the midfielder said during a press conference ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.
“We need someone with that quality. He’s a player from another world,” Casemiro added, stressing the importance of Neymar’s mental and physical well-being for both club and country.
